Many have responded with positive and supportive comments regarding our 10th Standard students scoring in the 90th percentile on the government exams. This accomplishment reflects the dedication and hard work of the students and of the teachers, who gave extra time to tutor and prepare the students for the exams. As we all know, education gives one options—options that sadly are not available to many children throughout the world.

Soniya and Mother
You may be familiar with the story of Malala Yousafzai, the young girl who was shot by the Taliban last year after speaking out in favor of girls’ education. In a speech at the United Nations she called on world leaders to provide free, compulsory education for every child.  In her words, “Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.”

Rising Star recognizes that education is a powerful tool which should be a privilege for every child. One of our students, Soniya, recently shared her excitement about scoring well on an exam: “I was so happy and my parents were so happy. I know it will help me reach my goal of becoming a doctor one day!”  Soniya now knows there are amazing possibilities beyond the curse of leprosy. She is an agent of change—maybe one child or one pen at a time!

Last month the Rising Star blog, launched a new initiative, Agent of Change, which recognizes a volunteer, partner, or supporter of Rising Star that exemplifies service and facilitates change.  We are surrounded by examples of those who are making a difference through service, sharing resources, or advocating for positives change in the world. Check out our blog for new updates!
